About

Swingin Standards, the old-fashioned way

In the Mood Jazz Group delivers

The group's leader hails originally from Kingston, Ontario, but is now based on Canada's west coast where she became a favourite with audiences in Victoria, Vancouver Island as well as mainland Canada having played events from Vancouver to Calgary, Edmonton to Toronto. Angela Verbrugge is a jazz vocalist who also composes her own music; this group is what she calls her project when it's time for standards we all know and love with experienced side musicians to tear up the solos and lay down the groove. "This lass with sass is just going to bowl you over!" Midwest Record.

Angela began her career playing piano, trombone, and acting in theatre, film and TV in Ontario. She graduated from George Brown Theatre School after a youth romping through old songbooks on her family's piano, watching vintage movie musicals, and falling in love with the aesthetic of the films with Fred Astaire, Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby. She performed in musicals such as Anything Goes, and haunted jazz venues before moving west and having a business career before feeling the call to return to performing. Her lifelong love of jazz standards and the Great American Songbook comes to fruition in this iteration of her band and musical expression of her talents.  While her career as a solo artist focuses on her original compositions and lyrics, her performances of lesser known standards makes its way into her recording catalogue. Angela has gathered between 12K-50K monthly listeners on Spotify, and in the last three years has toured in Japan, Turkey, the UK, Germany, Luxembourg and Canada.

In the Mood Jazz Group gathers musicians for whom the swing feel is paramount. The group size varies between duo and quintet (adding instruments including piano, guitar, vibraphone, bass, drums, tenor saxophone). The group’s repertoire welcomes listeners with songs they recognize from movies, popular culture, and classic jazz recordings of the 1930s-1950s.
